Hivernage 2 / Wintering 2

Le deuxième hivernage a eu lieu entre 2011 et 2012. Je pensais qu'il serait rapide car mon bateau semblait OK. Mais en l'examinant sur sa remorque, j'ai vu un éclat de peinture suspect sur la quille...
 The second wintering was 2011-2012. I thought it would be easy because my boat seemed more or less OK, but examining it closely on its trailer, I found a suspicious impact on the keel paint...

En testant un peu la quille dans la même région, j'ai créé un deuxième trou... le bois était en train de pourrir !
Testing a bit the keel in the same area, I created a second hole... the wood was rotting under my very eyes!

Première chose à faire, décaper toute la zone pour voir l'étendue des dégâts.
First thing to do: sand the whole area to check the extant of the damage

J'ai découvert alors que la pourriture avait seulement attaqué le coin de la quille, en 3 endroits alignés sur plus ou moins sur 40 cm d'arrête. Plutot que de remplacer le bois à 3 endroits, j'ai préféré râper le coin sur 40 cm pour pouvoir mettre une seule pièce de bois neuf. Quel bois mettre? j'avais de l'osage sous la main (du temps ou je faisais des arcs), qui est censé ne pas pourrir.
I then found that rot had started in 3 areas of the keel's corner, spaced along 40 cm of the keel angle. Rather than plug 3 holes, I thought I'd better rasp the keel's corner for 40 cm and then glue a single piece of new wood. Which wood would I use ? I had osage orange available (from my long gone bowyer's days) which is supposed to be very rot resistant.

J'ai fendu, puis poncé puis collé et vissé la lame d'osage sur la quille, elle même poncée.
I split, then rasped, then glued and screwed the osage slat on the keel, itself rasped to proper shape.

Belle réparation, n'est ce pas? Mais on pouvait quand même la repérer, à moins de 30 mètres de distance. Il faudrait encore travailler.
Nice fix, isn't it? But one could still tell there was a piece added, if he was standing less than 30 m away from my boat. There was still work to do.

Encore mieux... et les vis sont remplacées par des brochettes en bambou

Une fois que la réparation prit la forme de la quille d'origine, une couche de primaire.
Once the shape matches the original keel, a coat of primary paint for the whole area.

Puis, une nouvelle étanchéité au sika, le décapage ayant retiré l'ancien.
Then a new sikaflex waterproof barrier, as the old one had been removed by the sanding

Et 2 couches de blanc plus tard, je retrouve ma jolie coque. En plus de tout ce travail sur ma quille, j'ai reverni les espars (bome, quille et vergue) que je n'avais pas attaqués l'année d'avant. Plus le safran, qui est spécialement exposé aux rayures.
And 2 more white coats later, I got back my pretty hull. On top of my keel job, I revarnished the spars (mast, boom and gaff) that I did not touch the year before. Plus the rudder once again as it is quite exposed to scratches.

Hivernage 1 / Wintering 1

Comme nous sommes en aout et qu'il fait plus de 30 degrés, cela me parait un bon moment pour parler des travaux d'hiver que vous devrez accomplir sur votre dinghy 12 pour qu'il conserve son bel aspect.
As we're in August and the temperature is above 30C, I think it's a perfect time to tell you about the necessary winter works you'll need to perform on your dinghy so it retains its best looks.

Bizarrement, la première année (hiver 2010-2011), je n'ai pas pris de photos des travaux... juste quelques photos très importantes des détails du gréement pour être sur de savoir remonter mon bateau correctement quelques mois plus tard, et j'ai très bien fait. Les voici:
Stangely enough, it appears I did not take pictures of the first wintering job (2010-2011) except a few very important pics I took of the rigging before dismounting it, to be sure to be able to put it back correctly a few months later. Here they are:

Premier hiver 2010-2011:
-démontage de tout l'accastillage (y compris la dérive)
-retournement de la coque (à l'envers)
-ponçage léger mais intégral
-étanchéité refaite au sikaflex entre les coutures du bordé
-2 couches de blanc sous la flottaison
-3 couches de vernis sur les œuvres mortes
-retournement de la coque (à l'endroit)

-2 couches de vernis sur les flancs et les bancs
-1 couche de goudron de Norvège sur le fond
-aussi ponçage et vernissage du safran, de la barre et création d'un stick en bois d'if pour remplacer l’horrible stick en alu d'avant
50 heures passées au total...
First winter 2010-2011:
-removal of all moving parts (including the center board)
-hull turned upside-down
-light but complete sanding
-leaks between boards filled with sikaflex
-2 coats of white under the flotation line
-3 coats of varnish above the flotation line
-hull turned upside-up
-light but complete sanding
-2 coats of varnish on the sides and benches
-1 coat of Norway tar on the bottom
-also sanding and revarnishing of the rudder and the helm, plus making of a new yew stick to replace the ugly aluminum one that I had
50 hours invested in total...

Lac des Settons 2 / Les Settons Lake 2

Été 2010. Mon copain Peter, de Hong Kong, est venu passer quelques jours en Bourgogne. Je l'ai emmené aux Settons et il a apprécié mon dinghy 12' International, même s'il trouve que c'est un vieux clou. Joli, mais vieux clou quand même. Nous flirtons avec les 6 noeuds (!!!)
Summer 2010. My good friend Peter from Hong Kong came to spend a few days in Burgundy. I took him to Les Settons lake and he liked my International Dinghy 12', even if he believes it's an old clunker. A pretty one but still a clunker. We reached about 6 knots (!!!)

Admirez les vaches typiques du Morvan, tels qu'on les voit autour des Settons. Les charolaises sont plus diversifiées qu'il n'y parait.
Take a moment to admire the real Morvan cows, as they can be spotted around Les Settons. The charolaises show more variations than you would think.

Vent d'Ouest / West wind

Je m’étais lancé pour ne parler que du Dinghy 12’ International

Puis j’ai vite élargi aux dériveurs bois classiques français un peu originaux

Et me voilà en train de présenter  un quillard plastique qui a à peine 40 ans !

And here I am introducing a plastic keelboat designed only 40 years ago !

Oui, mais le Vent d’Ouest est le bateau emblématique du CVBS et j’ai navigué dessus la semaine dernière… c’est donc parti pour une digression que je pense unique sur ce blog (je ne jure plus de rien !)

Yes, but the Vent d’Ouest (West Wind in French) is the iconic boat of my CVBS sailing Club and I sailed her last week… so here I digress on this blog, hoping that it won’t happen again (I can’t swear of anything though!)

L’avantage pour un club situé sur la Seine est qu’avec sa voilure généreuse et son grand mat, il arrive a toucher des filets d’air que mon D12 a tendance à louper. Il remonte bien au vent, est plutôt rapide, et vire de bord pratiquement sur place.

The good thing with this boat, for a Seine River sailing club, is that due to her high mast and generous sail area, she manages to catch some wind puffs that evade my Dinghy 12’. She goes well upwind, is rather fast and tacks on a dime.

Pour l’écolage des adultes, c’est une très bonne plateforme puisqu’il accommode 3 personnes sans difficultés et qu’il ne chavirera pas (sauf à être bousculé par une péniche). La plupart des débutants adultes ont horreur du chavirage, et la qualité gustative des eaux de la Seine ayant bien décliné depuis l’époque de Jules César, je ne peux leur donner tout à fait tort. Autre avantage, sur la Seine nous sommes obligés d’avoir une sécu sur l’eau si des dériveurs naviguent, alors que nous pouvons nous en passer quand il n’y a que des quillards sur l’eau (ce qui était le cas la semaine dernière).

It’s a good platform to teach adults as you can crew 3 without problems and it won’t capsize (unless toppled by a river barge). Most beginners hate capsizing and as the taste of the Seine waters has somehow declined since Julius Caesar times, I can’t blame them. Another advantage of this stability is that on the Seine, we must use a safety motor boat at all times when using dinghies, while we can avoid it if only keelboats are sailing (which was the case last week).

Pour la mise à l’eau, il faut les gruter, mais notre club étant équipé de 2 grues, ce n’est pas un problème.
To launch them, we must use a crane but our club being equipped with 2 cranes, it's not a problem 

Navigation CVBS / Sailing at the Club

Jusqu'ici, 2013 a été une mauvaise année pour notre club du CVBS. L'hiver a trainé plus tard que d'habitude (la neige nous a encore visités à la mi-mars) et puis il y a eu la crue de la Seine, gérée, contenue, mais qui a été interminable. La crue signifie que notre quai est sous l'eau mais aussi que le courant est si rapide que nos voiliers ne peuvent pas se maintenir et se font emporter vers Maisons-Laffitte (puis Rouen, puis Le Havre, puis...)
 Up to now, 2013 was a bad year for our CVBS club. Winter dragged longer than usual (we had snow up to mid-March) and mostly the Seine River was in flood mode. A controled flood, a well managed flood but a very long event. The flood means that our quay is below water level, but also that the flow is so strong that our sailboat cannot fight and would be taken away to Maisons-Laffitte (then Rouen, then Le Havre, then...)

Pour faire simple, toutes les régates et évènements nautiques que nous avions prévus à Montesson  en mars, avril, mai et juin 2013 ont du être annulés.
To make it simple, all the regattas and events that we planned in Montesson in March, April, May and June 2013 had to be cancelled

Mais samedi dernier, la chance a tourné.
But last Saturday, we got lucky at last.

1) La Seine est retournée dans son lit ! (en dessous de 21,40m c'est tout juste bon...)
1) The Seine went back to its bed (below 21.40m altitude, it's just OK to sail)

2) Et il faisait beau !
2) And the weather was fine!

3) Et il y avait même un peu de vent ! (très irrégulier mais bon, on ne va pas chipoter)
3) And there was even a bit of wind ! (very gusty but we couldn't complain)

J'ai donc gréé mon dinghy pour la première fois au CVBS cette année. Vous pouvez voir que le quai surplombe la Seine d'une vingtaine de centimètres.
So I could rig up my dinghy for the first time this year in the CVBS. You can see that the water is not far below the quay.

C'est la première fois que mon dinghy navigue avec sa nouvelle immat.
First time that my dinghy flew its new number.

C'était aussi la première fois que ma plus jeune fille montait à bord.
It was also the first time that my youngest daughter went onboard

Avec 2 Vent d'Ouest du Club pour nous accompagner, nous avons passés une belle après-midi.
With 2 Vent d'Ouest (translated as "West Wind") from the Club, we spent a fine afternoon.

Bien sur, comme c'était un nouveau baptême pour mon bateau qui avait changé de nom et de numéro, nous avons bu le champagne au club pour conclure la journée.
Of course, as my dinghy was sailed under its new name and number, we drank champagne at the club to finish the day.

Femmes à la barre 2010 / Women at the helm 2010

Ma mère et une amie à "femmes à la barre", juin 2010, régate réservée aux femmes. Je ne sais pas si vous avez cette spécialité dans votre région. En 2010, au CVBS, il n'y avait que des femmes, uniquement, sur l'eau. Les hommes étaient invités à préparer les bateaux puis à les ranger en fin de journée.

Depuis, ça s'est un peu assoupli (par manque de femmes probablement) et les hommes peuvent embarquer comme équipiers.



My mother and her girlfriend at "women take the helm" June 2010 (loose translation of the French original name).

The rules say that once a year [and only once a year] the men service, clean, maintain, ready, etc. the boats for the ladies, and the ladies have a regatta without men. No men at all in 2010, it relaxed a little bit since (I guess due to low figures of interested women) as now men can crew boats but not touch the rudder.
