Ma mère et une amie à "femmes à la barre", juin 2010, régate réservée aux femmes. Je ne sais pas si vous avez cette spécialité dans votre région. En 2010, au CVBS, il n'y avait que des femmes, uniquement, sur l'eau. Les hommes étaient invités à préparer les bateaux puis à les ranger en fin de journée.

Depuis, ça s'est un peu assoupli (par manque de femmes probablement) et les hommes peuvent embarquer comme équipiers.

The rules say that once a year [and only once a year] the men service, clean, maintain, ready, etc. the boats for the ladies, and the ladies have a regatta without men. No men at all in 2010, it relaxed a little bit since (I guess due to low figures of interested women) as now men can crew boats but not touch the rudder.

Donc, le Monotype d'Arcachon est un peu plus gros. Question gréement, tous deux sont au tiers fortement apiqués, mais le Dinghy est un "standing lug" (la bôme venant en appui contre le mat) tandis que le Monotype est un "balanced lug" (la bôme projette légèrement devant le mat). Conséquence, on ne gambille pas avec un monotype d'Arcachon et il manque donc nos habituelles balancines de gambillage.

So, the Monotype is slightly bigger than the Dinghy. Regarding sailplan, they are both lug rigs, but while the dinghy is a standing lug (its boom pushes against the mast), the Monotype is a balanced lug (the boom project further than the mast). As a consequence, you cannot switch the gaff from side to side while tacking by just pulling a line.

Regarding the wooden hull construction, it can be made carvel or strip-planked but contrary to our dinghies cannot be lapstrake. 

Autres différences? Les haubans sont interdits sur le Monotype, obligatoires sur le Dinghy. La dérive du Dinghy est un parallélogramme quand celle du Monotype est une portion de pizza, comme celle du Finn. Cependant, les 2 bateaux ont des dérives plates et en acier, pas des dérives légères et en forme.


Other differences? Shrouds are forbidden on the Monotype, mandatory on the Dinghy. The centreboard of the Dinghy is a parallelogram while the Monotype's center board is pizza-sliceoid (like the Finn's). However, both boats carry flat steel centerboards, and not light foils.

Je n'ai pas essayé de Monotype ni n'ai navigué de conserve avec l'un d'eux, mais je pense qu'il serait intéressant de faire une régate mixte Dinghies 12'-Monotypes un de ces jours. A noter que les Monotypes usent communément de leurs ris sur leurs photos quand nos dinghies de nos jours ont le choix entre utiliser toute leur toile ou rester au port.

I did not sail a Monotype nor sailed together with them, but I think it would be interesting to have a mixed regatta Dinghies 12'-Monotypes d'Arcachon one of these days. I noted watching their pictures that the Monotypes seem to commonly reef their sail while nowadays our dinghies are either using all their sail area or staying on shore.

 
Il en existe en plastique, mais qui ne semblent pas reconnus par le reste de la classe (ça vous rappelle quelque chose?).
Some are made of plastic but do not appear to be recognized as Monotypes by the other class members (does it remind you of another controversy?)

Descente de la Seine / Going down the Seine River

Une fois par an en juin, les Clubs de voile du Pecq (YCP), de Montesson (CVBS) et de La Frette (SNF) organisent la fameuse Descente de la Seine.

Once a year in June, the sailing clubs of Le Pecq (YCP), of Montesson (CVBS) and La Frette (SNF) organise jointly the famous "going down with the Seine River"

Ce Marathon de 11 km commence par l'étape Pecq-Montesson le matin (5 km), ou un déjeuner de quelques heures réconforte les équipages éprouvés,  puis une deuxième manche Montesson-La Frette l'après-midi (6 km)

This Marathon of 11 km starts with the Pecq-Montesson run in the morning (5km), where the exhausted crew rest for a few hours lunch, followed by a second run Montesson-La Frette (6 km) in the afternoon.

Mon copain Robert, canadien de Pékin, sera l'écopier de cette régate. Toute la flotte (une cinquantaine de bateaux?) se rassemble pour attendre les 3 départs (quillards, habitables et dériveurs).

My Beijing Canadian friend Robert will act as my bailer during this regatta. All the fleet (about 50 boats?) is waiting for the 3 departure procedures: sport keelboats, cruise boats and dinghies. 

Au final, cette année là (2010) le vent s'est arrêté de souffler dès le départ et c'est le courant qui nous a mollement emmenés jusqu'à La Frette.
Finally that year (2010), the wind stopped just as the race started, and only the current brought us lazily to La Frette.

Durant le premier parcours, j'ai vaincu un vaurien en plastique (seulement!) et le même vaurien plus un 420 (qui avait réussi l'exploit de taper un pont) durant le deuxième parcours. Mais les juges avaient déjà déserté la ligne d'arrivée.

During the first lap, I beat a plastic vaurien (only !) and during the second, the same vaurien plus a 420. But the judges had already deserted the arrival line...

Puis vint le long retour vers Montesson, tiré par les annexes.

Then finally came the long return to Montesson pulled by the safety boats.

Après plusieurs traversées sans histoires de la Seine à Montesson, j'ai commencé à songer à de nouveaux défis et à rêver d'océans. Quelle mer choisir ? En France ça ne manque pas...

Eh bien, ma famille a une maison en Bourgogne dans le Morvan, au milieu duquel il y a le Lac des Settons

Well, my family has a foothold in Burgundy (=Bourgogne), in the Morvan area, and in the middle of Morvan lies a Lake: Les Settons.

Le barrage de ce lac artificiel a été construit en 1858 pour aider au flottage du bois de chauffage en direction de Paris. On y stockait l'eau de la Cure et au printemps, on "tirait la chasse" qui emmenait les grumes vers la Seine. Au milieu des années 20, le charbon a tué cette activité

This lake had a practical purpose when built in 1858: storage water of the Cure river in order to float wood towards Paris burnt for heating. Basically, they were flushing the logs in spring. This went on until the mid-twenties when cheap coal killed the industry

Should I disappear without telling the story of my boat to its new owner, I left an obvious clue about its past.

Journée productive au CVBS (Cercle de la Voile des Boucles de la Seine) samedi : suite de l'arrachage des vieux numéros, du nettoyage de la vieille colle et nouveauté, collage des nouveaux numéros. Merci à Jean-Pierre et Patrick qui s'occupent comme ils peuvent après avoir restauré le plongeon de Sequana.

A busy Saturday at the CVBS, my club: I finished ripping off my old sail numbers, removing the glue with aceton and we sticked the new numbers. Helping me were the 2 Plongeons rebuilders of Sequana, Jean-Pierre and Patrick.

Aussi une couche de vernis sur le tableau et donc le nom du bateau, tout à l'air correct.

On the transom and the name, a new layer of varnish. Seems OK

Les plongeons de Chatou / the Chatou divers (or loons)

Le 25 mai 2013, nous avons été invités par l'Association Sequana de Chatou à venir assister à la mise à l'eau du Plongeon numéro 92, en restauration depuis plusieurs années. Sequana sait recevoir, cornemuses et spécialités bretonnes à déguster.

On May 25th, 2013, we've been invited by the Sequana Association to the lauch of the Plongeon number 92, that had been undergoing a serious rebuilding for the past few years. Sequana knows how to celebrate, we enjoyed bagpipes and Brittany delicacies.

Connaissez vous le Plongeon? C'est un dériveur charmant lancé en 1931 par Philippe DAUCHEZ. Long de 4m et large de 1,20m, il a la même surface de voile que nos dinghies (9,5m2) pour un poids de seulement 80kg.Tout d'abord houari, il est assez vite devenu marconi. En 1933, il dépasse les 100 exemplaires mais passe de mode juste avant-guerre.

Do you know the Plongeon? It's a charming dinghy designed by Philippe DAUCHEZ in 1931. 4 meters long and 1,2 meters wide, it has the same sail area as our 12' dinghies (9.5 m2) for a lighter weight of 80 kg. Starting gunter rigged, the Plongeon quickly became bermudean. In 1933, more than 100 Plongeon exist but they became out of fashion before WW2.

et comme un plongeon ne suffisait pas pour régater, un deuxième plongeon est venu l'épauler!
