Fête des Canots, Rolle 2015 (small boats fiesta, Rolle 2015)

Je rentre à peine de Rolle, en Suisse, sur la cote nord du Lac Léman, où j'ai pu faire naviguer mon bateau pour la première fois.
I'm just back from Rolle, in Switzerland, on the North side of the Leman Lake, where I sailed my boat for the first time.

Nous avons eu droit tout d'abord à une présentation de ce qui sera peut être l'avenir de notre
sport, à savoir une série de 4 hydro-cycles tous aussi révolutionnaires les uns que les autres.
We were first shown what will maybe be the future of our sport, that is a set of 4 different 
hydro-cycles all of them revolutionary.

Pour le loisir, il n'est pas sur qu'ils remplacent tout de suite nos bons canots à voile en bois,
mais pour la marine marchande, le progrès est indéniable.
For leasure, it's not quite sure they will immediately replace our good wooden sailing 
dinghies, but for shipping goods, you can't deny their practicality.

Skippers' briefing

Puis toujours tôt le matin (vers 14:00) vint le moment du briefing aux skippers. On ne rigole 
pas avec la sécurité et les instructions en Suisse, nous avons eu un rappel détaillé des 
pavillons qui allaient être utilisés et ça a donné a peu près ça:
Then, still early in the morning (around 2 pm) came the skippers' briefing. You don't joke 
with safety and racing instructions in Switzerland, we were given a crash course in the flags 
that would be used and it gave approximately this:

Y: une voiture est mal garée et le concurrent doit rentrer au quai pour la déplacer

P: il faudra faire deux fois le tour de chaque bouée du parcours.

C: signifie que P a été hissé par erreur et donc l'annule

Danemark: ce pavillon sera hissé pour honorer les concurrents danois

M: signifie que la manche se fera à l'aviron

Y + M: signifie que le concurrent dont la voiture est mal garée doit rentrer la déplacer 

à l'aviron

W: est le substitut et se substitue à n'importe quel autre pavillon pour signifier pareil

U et O: le comité de course décidera pendant la régate quel sens leur attribuer

Y: a car is not well parked and the competitor must go back to move it somewhere else

P: this flag means that the racers will have to circle twice around each buoy

C: means that P was wrongly hoisted and thus cancels it

Danemark: this flag will be hoisted to honor the Danish competitors

M: means that the leg will be rowed instead of sailed

Y + M: means that the competitor whose car is not well parked must now row back to shore

to move it

W: is the substitute and can replace any other flag to mean the same thing

U and O: the race comittee will decide while the regatta is on, which meaning they shall have

Le soir, nous avons pu boire une soupe de poisson du lac et manger des meringues à la 
crème en regardant nos bateaux noyés par la pluie s'enfoncer dans les eaux du Léman
During the evening, we drank a soup of lake fish and ate some meringues with cream while
watching our boats drenched by the rain slowly sink in the Lemanic waters

 









Le dimanche, même bonne ambiance et meme temps menaçant pour faire de la voile et
aussi regarder une course d'aviron.
On Sunday, same great mood and same menacing weather to enjoy sailing and also watch
a rowing leg.

Dernier point ! Il n'y a pas de monstre dans le lac, mais il y a des vapeurs magnifiques et 
très rapides, écartez vous quand vous les entendez siffler !!
Last point ! There are no monster in that lake, but there are some beautiful and very fast 
steamships, get away when you hear them whistle !!

Le diner de samedi, commencé un peu tard pour certains
Saturday's dinner, launched a bit late for some 

Le dimanche a été moins venteux, ce qui fait que mon bateau avec son équipage de 2 personnes s'est vraiment trainé dans les fonds du classement
On Sunday the wind abated, so my boat with its crew of 2 really dragged at the bottom of the rankings

Donc, nous les français n'avons guère brillé... mais comme les prix ont été tirés au sort c'est là que la France a eu une domination décisive: Nicolas a gagné la pagaie et j'ai gagné la paire d'avirons, les 2 prix que Pieter offrait et qu'il a fabriqués lui même !!
So the French did quite poorly... except for the prizes that were attributed by a lucky draw, that's where France dominated the weekend as Nicolas won the paddle and I won the pair of oars, both prizes having been self made and offered by Pieter !!

Je n'ai pas de photos de moi avec mes avirons tout neufs, si quelqu'un peut m'en envoyer une...
I don't have a picture of me and my brand new oars, if anyboday can send me one... 

En résumé, super weekend, super ambiance, bon vent, eau tiède, grand succès. Merci à tous ceux qui sont venus courir ou se porter bénévoles
In short, great weekend, great atmosphere, good wind, warm waters, big success. Thanks to all that came racing or helping.

Le récit du Grand Rassemblement des D12 bois aux Settons 2015 (1/2) / The story of the Great wooden D12 meeting in Les Settons 2015 (1/2)

Comme annoncé récemment, le weekend dernier a vu la plus belle flotte de Dinghy 12' bois jamais assemblée en France rivaliser d'élégance sur le Lac des Settons.
As previously advertised, last weekend saw the biggest fleet of wooden Dinghy 12' ever gathered in France compete with style on the Settons Lake.

16 bateaux au total répartis comme suit:

9 hollandais (dont 1 skipper canadien)
3 français (dont 1 n'a pas pu naviguer, avarie)
2 suisses (dont 1 skipper anglais)
1 australien (mais basé en Irlande, ce n'est pas trop loin des Settons)
1 allemand (normal, lui)

16 boats spread as follows:
9 Dutch (with 1 Canadian skipper)
3 French (one of whom could not sail due to a breakdown)
2 Swiss (with 1 English skipper)
1 Australian (but as he lives in Ireland, it's not too far from Les Settons)
1 German (this one normal)

Pour moi, tout a commencé le vendredi: quitter le bureau vers midi, prendre ma voiture chez moi, passer au club chercher le bateau, le remplir d'eau, passer des heures dans les bouchons, constater que toute l'eau a fui de la coque, penser à dégonfler les flottaisons vers 400 mètres d'altitude (Montesson est à 20m, les Settons frôle les 600m !), arriver au lac, gréer le bateau, le couler dans le lac pas trop profondément et enfin rejoindre les autres pour le barbecue avant qu'ils finissent les saucisses.
Everything started for me on Friday: leave the office around noon, take my car from home, pass by the Club to pick-up the boat, fill it up with water, spend hours in traffic-jams, realize the water all leaked out of the hull, remember to deflate the flotation reserves when already at 400m high (Montesson is around 20m high, les Settons is almost at 600m!), arrive to the Lake, rig the boat up, sink it in shallow water and then only join the other for the barbecue before they eat the last sausages.

Les participants rassemblés sous un barnum se retrouvent ou font connaissance. Soi-disant, il y aura plus de 15 nœuds de vent demain, on verra bien. C'est très calme ce soir en tout cas.
The contestants gathered under a big tent are rejoining or meeting for the first time. Some say that there will be more than 15 knots of wind tomorrow. We'll see. It's dead calm tonight anyway.

Le lendemain matin, en effet, le vent souffle fort. Quelques moutons sur le lac, je suis content d'avoir un lourd équipier, Laurent, avec moi à bord. Nous vidons mon dinghy avec mon admirable pompe électrique portative rechargeable  et faisons nos premières courses.
The next morning, it's true the wind blows rather strongly. There are a few whitecaps and I'm happy to sail with my heavy crew, Laurent. We empty my dinghy with my excellent electric handheld battery operated water pump and we start our first legs.

Deux voiles ? Two sails ?

Le samedi nous n'avons navigué qu'à 14. Pierrot avait cassé 2 clins, Frédéric n'ose pas sortir à cause du vent.
On Saturday, only 14 of us sailed. Pierrot broke 2 boards, Frédéric did not dare going out with this wind.




3 manches le matin, 2 l'après midi.
3 legs in the morning, 2 in the afternoon

La pause déjeuner, prévue sur une plage lointaine finalement se fera sur la base Activital.
The lunch break, supposed to be on a beach far away was finally held on the Activital base.

 

 








Nous alternons des manches courtes et des plus longues quand nous faisons le tour de l'ile.

Tous les départs que lance Jack se font au lièvre. Ça n'est pas très courant en dinghy mais ça a l'avantage de nécessiter peu de monde à organiser et d’être rapide à lancer. Comme m'a dit Jack le dimanche: "tu vois, les départs au lièvre, il y a eu une fois où nous avons attendu 5 mn, le temps que le vent s'établisse, alors qu'en départ classique, il y aurait eu au moins 5 mn d'attente avant chaque départ".
All the starts lauched by Jack are gate starts. It's not very common in the Dinghy 12 class, but it has the advantage of needing few people to organize and to be quick to launch. As Jack told me on Sunday: " you see, with gate starts, only once did we wait 5 mn for the wind to settle on a direction, while if we had done classical starts, we would have waited at least 5 mn before each start".

Grand Rassemblement des D12 aux Settons 2015 / Great D12 meeting in Les Settons 2015

Les 11 et 12 juillet 2015 sont attendus 17 dinghy 12' bois aux Settons. Je reviendrai avec le reportage et les photos de l'évènement

July 11th and 12th 2015, we are expecting in Les Settons 17 wooden dinghies from several European countries. I'll bring back the story and the pictures.
