On November 31st 2016, my son, a friend and I went (with 2 cars) exploring a few kilometers of the Eure River in our pretty folding kayaks.
Nous avions une ressource inespérée, le Comité Départemental du tourisme d'Eure et Loir a publié plusieurs notices très bien faites décrivant des parcours possibles et la façon de passer les obstacles.
We had a wonderful ressource at our disposal, the local Tourism Comittee had published online a few guides showing routes and how to avoid obstacles.
Sur le chemin, passage rapide dans la jolie ville de Houdan pour acheter des sandwiches.
On the way, a quick stop in the pretty town of Houdan to buy sandwiches.
Nous passons déjà poser une voiture au lac d'Ecluzelles qui sera notre point d'arrivée. Le lac est très beau et dispose d'une impressionante base nautique. Ca doit etre un très bon endroit à visiter aussi en Dinghy 12'.
We first drop a car at the Ecluzelles lake which will be our arrival point. The lake is beautiful and has a big sailboat marina. It must be a very good place also for sailing 12' dinghies.
Puis nous nous empilons dans la deuxième voiture et remontons l'Eure jusqu'à Villemeux sur Eure qui sera notre point d'assemblage des kayaks et notre point de départ.
Then we stuff everybody in the second car and drive upstream up to Villemeux sur Eure, which will be the place where we will assemble the kayaks and our starting point.
Pourquoi les assembler ? Parce qu'il s'agit de kayaks pliants. Aujourd'hui, c'est plutôt rare, mais avant que quelqu'un ait eu la malheureuse idée dans les années 60 d'en fabriquer en fibre de verre, (puis plus tard en plastique...), tous les kayaks européens étaient fait d'une peau souple tendue sur une armature en bois, très similaires à leurs ancêtres traditionnels inuits (qui eux n'étaient pas démontables).
Why assembling them ? Because these are folding kayaks. Today they're seldom seen, but before somebody in the sixties had the unfortunate idea to make them out of fiber glass (and even later out of plastic...) all the European kayaks were made of a supple skin stretched over a wooden frame, very similar to their traditional Inuit ancestors (even if these were not folding).
Leurs avantages ? Ils sont beaux, légers, traditionnels, se rangent dans un (gros) placard, et se transportent dans le coffre d'une voiture normale (ou en train, ou en avion...)
Their benefits? They are beautiful, traditional, can be kept in a (big) closet and can be carried around in a regular car trunk (or taken by train or plane).

Mais vous voulez surement savoir: n'y a t'il pas un danger que ces kayaks se replient soudainement pendant qu'on pagaie ? Peu de chance d'avoir de gros problèmes sur mes 8 kilomètres d'Eure.

Le long du parcours, il y a quelques obstacles à éviter, rien de bien méchant car nos kayaks sont légers. Le premier était un petit barrage de moulin.
Along the way, there were a few obstructions to avoid. Nothing difficult because our kayaks are light. The first was a little mill dam.

Des Cygnes !
Swans!
Nous avons rencontré un groupe de cygnes qui n'aimaient pas notre compagnie. Ils nous ont fui par l'avant sur des kilomètres, refusant de nous laisser les doubler mais incapables de s'enfuir à tire-d'aile car les plus jeunes ne savaient pas encore voler. En battant des ailes au ras de l'eau, ils ont maintenu leur avance.
We met a group of swans that did not enjoy our company. They escaped by swimming downstream for miles, refusing to let us pass them but unable to flee by flying because their youngsters could not yet fully fly. By flapping their wings on the water surface, they managed to keep their lead.

Tout s'est bien passé même si mon fils et moi avons failli nous renverser une fois en nous prenant dans des branches. Nous arrivons au point de sortie pour quitter la rivière et passer sur le lac
All went rather well, even if my son and I almost capsized at one time by tangling in branches. We arrive at the exit point from the River, switching for the lake

Après avoir rejoint la première voiture, un dernier petit sac à sortir du coffre, et hop, voici le Klepper transformé en voilier ! Mon fils emprunte le Pionier et Laurent monte avec moi.
After getting to the first car, a last little bag to pull out of the trunk and presto, here is the Klepper changed into a sailboat ! My son borrows the Pionier and Laurent sails with me.
5 m2 de toile, dommage, le vent était retombé. Dommage aussi que j'aie oublié le gouvernail dans ma cave, j'ai dû barrer avec une pagaie.
5 sqm of sail area, too bad that the wind died. Too bad also that I had forgotten the rudder in my basement, I had to steer with a paddle.
Une bizarrerie à signaler, il y a un dolmen sur une ile du lac. Comme celui-ci est une gravière récente, j'avais cru qu'il s'agissait d'une réplique moderne, mais pas du tout, il est vraiment préhistorique et le lac a été creusé tout autour !
A curiosity of note, there is a dolmen on an island of the lake. As this is a recent man-made lake, I thought it was a modern replica, but not at all, it is indeed a real prehistoric monument and the lake was dug all around it.
